A new survey, which is supported by Next Green Car & Zap-Map, has been commissioned by KiWi Power, Carbon Trust and the High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI) who are working with InnovateUK to investigate viable ways of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the national grid.

Using what is known as a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) system, as well as receiving energy from the grid, EVs connected to a charging point can help power the national grid for short periods of time. This can help match the national supply and demand of electricity, one of the problems faced by the grid at several times during the day.

EV owners and regular users are therefore being invited to participate in a new survey to better understand how many EV drivers would participate in any future V2G scheme and what reward they would require in order to do so.

In the words of Dr Ben Lane, director of Next Green Car, which owns Zap-Map: “Improving the integration of the national grid and the electric vehicle fleet will become a critical issue when the number of EVs is in the millions rather than the 50,000 already on UK roads.

“Being able to coordinate overnight charging through smart metering will increase generator efficiency and reduce overall carbon emissions as well as cut energy costs. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) offers yet more potential to balance national electric loads with demand, and may also provide significant rewards for EV drivers who are signed up to such schemes.”

The new V2G EV Survey, which is for EV owners and regular users, focuses on the possible options for future V2G services. All participants completing the survey are entered into a prize draw for one of two £50 gift vouchers.

About the survey partners

KiWi Power, Carbon Trust and HSSMI are working on an InnovateUK feasibility study investigating commercially viable ways of integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into the national grid to provide load levelling at times of peak electricity demand.

High Speed Sustainable Manufacturing Institute (HSSMI) – HSSMI conducts research with industry and academia to bring a step change to UK manufacturing, improving skills, knowledge and efficiency. Visit website

KiWi Power – They provide demand management using technology to reduce electricity consumption at peak times across industrial and commercial sites. Visit website

Carbon Trust – The Carbon Trust is an independent organisation, working with businesses worldwide, helping them contribute to and benefit from a more sustainable future through carbon reduction, resource efficiency strategies and commercialising low carbon technologies. Visit website

Zap-Map – is the UK’s most comprehensive electric car charging points map. Owned and managed by Next Green Car, Zap-Map provides consumers with details on the charging points locations, charger-type and, where data is available, additional information such as fee for charging, access and parking.
