Electric vehicles have won 10 out of 11 prizes in the Next Green Car Awards 2016, with pure-electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell models becoming category champions.
Pure electric winners were the VW e-up!, Renault Zoe Z.E. 40, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Tesla Model X, and Morgan EV3, with the Hyundai Ioniq also taking the overall prize of NGC Car of the Year 2016.
Plug-in hybrids in the shape of the BMWs 225xe and 330e, and Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid also won their categories, while Riversimple’s Rasa hydrogen fuel cell vehicle won the Next Generation award.
The only award winner that isn’t an electric vehicle is the Toyota C-HR Hybrid, which still has an electrified powertrain of some sort.
Plug-in models also saw success in the Commended spots in each category. Mahindra’s e2o, the BMW i3, Audi’s Q7 e-tron, the Mercedes Benz E 350 e, Porsche’s Panamera E-Hybrid, and the Tesla Model 3 came in as runner-up in the ten categories.
The results mean that 15 out of the 20 individual finalist spots – the Car of the Year Award is picked from category winners – were made up of electric vehicles.
The NGC Awards 2016 helps show the breadth of choice available for plug-in car buyers, with all sorts of models available. Award winners, which have come on to the market or are available to order in 2016, range from tiny city cars such as the Mahindra, through to large SUVs in the shape of the Tesla Model X.
