InstaVolt has been improving rapid EV charging infrastructure in North Devon, with new units installed at Barnstaple. Added to the Taw Garages forecourt, the network’s DC units charge at up to 50 kW.

With the area both a popular holiday destination and featuring a relative scarcity of rapid points, the new units will make it easier for EV drivers to visit the region.

As with other InstaVolt units, usage is on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no membership or connection fees. The cost to use is 35p/kWh, and access is via a conventional contactless credit or debit card.

Richard Brend, senior director of Taw Garages & PRB Hoteliers’ at Taw Garages, said: “They’re proving popular already and we’ve welcomed quite a few new faces because of the chargers. It’s clear that electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular so it was important for us to add to our offering and cater for those drivers.”

Tim Payne, CEO of InstaVolt, says his firm is working with an increasing number of traditional petrol and diesel retailers as many seek to get ahead of the curve. “Sales of electric cars are rising and it’s great to see forecourts like Taw Garages being forward-thinking and adapting in response.”
