A new rapid charging point has been installed at Meadowhall shopping complex in Sheffield and is now officially open to the public.

The rapid charge point has been launched as part of the Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme that’s being rolled out across South Yorkshire.

The EV Inmotion! scheme is a collaborative effort involving npower, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and the South Yorkshire local authorities of Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. It is focused on encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles in an effort to reduce emissions and improve the regions air quality.

The new charge point – found at S9 1ER – is capable of providing an 80% charge to an EV in under 30 minutes and offers three types of connector (CCS, CHAdeMO and Mennekes).

Phil Evans, Head of e-mobility at npower, said: “We are delighted to launch the rapid charging point at what is an iconic South Yorkshire venue – Meadowhall. It is part of the long-term Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme that is designed to help local businesses take advantage of the real sustainable and commercial benefits electric vehicle fleets can bring.

“We are working hard alongside the local councils to ensure the transition to electric powered fleets is smooth and effective, and the infrastructure support required, such as rapid charging points, is essential in this process.

“We have already seen real interest in the scheme and we aim to have up to 40 local companies signed up to Electric Vehicles Inmotion! by March 2015.”

The charging point was officially revealed by Fifth Gear’s Jonny Smith, who is presently working on an npower sponsored project to build Europe’s quickest road legal EV, the ‘Flux Capacitor’.
