The Mercedes Benz EQC will have its official premier at the Me Convention in Stockholm in early September – pipping the forthcoming debut of the Audi e-tron quattro (below) by about a fortnight.

Having waited patiently for a premium German pure-electric SUV to arrive, two come along at once. Unlike London buses, these models will seat five, travel a few hundred miles on electric power only, and currently only come wrapped in camouflage.

The EQC is the first model to come from Mercedes’ electric brand, with the EQ name set to rapidly be added to a number of new models. The EQC will be available with a 70 kWh battery, and an expected range of 250-300 miles. Considering Jaguar’s I-Pace and the Audi both have batteries of around 90 kWh, the EQC will have to be very efficient to match its rivals official driving ranges.

The new Mercedes and Audi will double the scope of the EV SUV market, with each joining Tesla and Jaguar before October arrives. The EQC will be shown off as part of the Me Convention – a collaboration between the German brand and the South by South West (SXSW) festival -while Audi’s e-tron quattro will be launched at an event in San Francisco, and both are expected to get their conventional debuts at the Paris Motor Show in early October.
