Tesla has launched the latest variant of an ever evolving model line-up, with a new 100D version od the Model S and Model X now available to buy. The 100D variant now offers an official electric driving range of up to 393 miles on a single charge.

The new battery option is a toned down version of the flagship P100D model S and Model X, but what it loses out in outright acceleration, it makes up for in driving range. The Model S 100D already comfortably had the longest electric driving range of any mass-produced EV, but has now stretched that further to an official NEDC figure of 393 miles. The Model X also sees a new maximum range come in with 351 miles claimed to be available.

Even with real-world driving range taken into consideration, the Model S 100D and Model X 100D should be able to achieve at least 300 miles and 275 miles respectively as very conservative estimates. The US EPA rating is 335 miles for the Model S and 295 miles for the Model X, which is recognised to be a more reliable quote in terms of electric driving range compared to the NEDC cycle.

Performance is still as brisk as you would expect from a Tesla, matching the 90D model for 0-60mph acceleration time and top speed. Both will reach 155mph, with the saloon capable of completing the 0-60mph dash in 4.2 seconds, and the SUV 4.8 seconds.

Interestingly, the 100D is £3,000 more than the 90D, representing surprisingly strong value for money, compared to the almost £40,000 premium buyers pay for the Model S P100D over the non-Performance version, and the £37,000 for the Model X P100D over the 100D.

The Model S and Model X 100D start at £87,500 and £92,300 respectively, including the £4,500 UK Plug-in Car Grant.
