Mitsubishi has launched the new Outlander PHEV in the UK, announcing pricing and specifications for the UK’s best-selling plug-in car.
Although visually similar to the previous model, the latest Outlander PHEV has seen more than just cosmetic changes. A new 2.4 litre petrol engine produces more power and torque – at 135hp and 211Nm respectively – while the rear electric motor’s power has increased as well, to 95hp.
Almost most importantly though, the battery capacity has been boosted, from the previous model’s 12 kWh pack, to the new 13.8 kWh battery. Combined, the upgrades mean the Outlander PHEV has an official WLTP fuel economy figure of 139 MPG, CO2 emissions of 46 g/km, and an electric driving range of 28 miles.
These figures are down a little on the previous model’s economy statistics, though this is because the older version was tested on the out-dated NEDC protocol, and the new model has been put through the tougher and more accurate WLTP tests.
Suspension elements have been improved to improve low-speed ride, and there’s a new Sport Mode available for improved throttle response and grip. The all-wheel drive system also has a new Snow mode for slippery surfaces.
Mitsubishi also claims that the model is quieter and more refined than before, with upgraded front seats and revised instrument cluster. The design has been tweaked too with a new honeycomb front grille, lower bumper and headlights at the front. Rear changes see a roof spoiler added and revised bumper, while the wheels are now two-tone 18-inch alloys.
On sale now, there will are three trim levels – Juro, 4h and 4hs – with the range starting at £34,255, including the £2,500 OLEV Plug-in Car Grant.
