Plug-in models have taken a number of prizes at the Next Green Car Awards 2015. The awards aim to highlight the year’s best green cars and see two pure-EVs and six plug-in hybrids claim titles.

Chosen from a shortlist of 40 models competing across 10 categories, the Nissan Leaf 30kWh and Tesla Model X won the Small Family and Next Generation prizes respectively. They each beat a plug-in model into the commended spot with the VW Golf GTE coming in as runner up to the Nissan and BMW’s forthcoming 330e being pipped by the large Tesla.

Mitsubishi’s more refined Outlander PHEV won the SUV award and Volkswagen’s Passat GTE took the large family prize. Volvo’s XC90 T8 TwinEngine was commended in the SUV category while the Mercedes Benz C350e won the same title though in the executive section.

The plug-in models helped the list of 20 winners and commend models have an average CO2 emissions level of just 72 g/km and only two plug-in models that made the shortlist didn’t quite make it to the final announcement. Nissan’s e-NV200 Combi MPV and the Volkswagen Passat GTE Estate were just pipped in their respective categories, but did well to make the shortlist nonetheless.
