Shell has plans to open a ‘no-petrol’ station, with EV charging, hydrogen refuelling, and biofuels on offer rather than the usual petrol and diesel.

The move would be the first such site to open in the UK, and highlights the shift in focus Royal Dutch Shell is taking, with the oil giant preparing for life when petrol and diesel aren’t the main fuel types.

The station will be based in London, though the site is yet to be decided upon according to reports by The Telegraph. The forecourt will be powered by renewable energy though, with solar panels on the roof.

Shell already has a hydrogen refuelling site open in the UK at Cobham services, located alongside its petrol station on the M25. The company has also committed to installing EV charge points on some of its forecourts in London and Derby by the end of 2017.

Although still in the planning stage, Shell is currently stealing a march on other oil companies by bringing in electric car refuelling technology early on. Should the non-petrol station prove successful, it is hoped that the concept will be expanded to other locations too, alongside a roll-out of its EV charge point plans.
