Tesla seems to be almost continuously updating its model line-up, with a Model S 75 and 75 D added to the range. The move follows on from the launch of an entry-level Model S 60 variant less than three weeks ago, and UK specifications announced and order books opened for the Model X SUV within the last fortnight.
With the launch of the Model S 60 and 60D variants, Tesla had decided to offer two main models – 60 and 90 – and offer a Model S 70 as an upgrade option from the Model S 60 base.
Strangely, despite having Model S 60 and 70 models available – plus dual motor versions of both – the battery pack for all four possible permutations was 75 kWh. The 60 and 60 D models had a piece of software to restrict output to 60 kWh which could be unlocked either at the time of purchase or as an aftermarket feature. The upgraded model – badged Model S 70 or 70D – was simply labelled as such, but in fact used the same 75 kWh battery hardware.
Now though, the mid-range model upgrade option has been removed and there are three basic variants based around the 60, 75 and 90 badges. The model line-up now reads Model S 60, 60D, 75, 75D, 90D and P90D.
The change in badging has brought a slight reduction in price too as the previous cost of the software upgrade cost an additional £7,850 over the basic Model S 60 price – which started at £53,400. The replacement Model S 75 range now starts at £60,900, with a Model S 75 D costing from £65,300.
With the change in model offerings, it seems as though Tesla has removed the option of upgrading the Model S 60 and 60D’s battery, as was available since Friday 10th June. It would be unusual to remove the option completely after less than a month of being available though so it is expected that it will remain a possibility.
The other main features remain the same, with regular over the air software updates, free Tesla Supercharge use around the world, satellite navigation, large touchscreen infotainment system, and the option to add features such as Autopilot, smart air suspension, high power charger, and rear facing seats.
The Model S 75 and 75D models are available to order now with delivery dates expected in September for UK customers.
