Volvo has started production of the XC40 Recharge P8, its first pure-electric model. The SUV will feature a range of around 249 miles, and is due to arrive in European dealerships later this month.
A crucial part of Volvo’s electrification plans, the XC40 Recharge P8 will be able to charge to 80% in around 40 minutes from 150 kW DC ultra-rapid chargers.
Powered by twin electric motors for all-wheel drive, the electric XC40 produces 300 kW (408 hp). Thanks to a 78 kWh battery, the official charging range almost reaches 250 miles on a charge.
Using a new Android-powered infotainment system, the XC40 Recharge P8 has Google systems built in, with over-the-air updates available.
Because the XC40 is built on a platform designed with electrification in mind, there is more space available inside than the internal combustion models. A motor fitted to each axle frees up load space under the bonnet, and the battery sits in the car’s floor, removing impact on passenger space.
Order books remain open, but every car scheduled to be built this calendar year has already been sold. Prices in the UK start from £53,155, which makes it ineligible for the UK Plug-in Car Grant because of the £50,000 threshold.
