A record-breaking 577 electric vehicles (EVs) took to the Tempelhof track in Berlin last weekend to establish be crowned the world’s largest electric vehicle parade.
The total easily surpassed the previous mark of 507, which was set in Silicon Valley, USA in September 2014.
The parade was watched by 21,000 spectators and featured all different breeds of EV including small cars, quadricycles, electric pick-ups and luxury cars made up the parade.
The most represented vehicle was the Citroen C-Zero (111 vehicles) followed by the Tesla Model S.
The event was organised by Swiss Environmental Adventurer Louis Palmer, holder of the “Champion of the Earth Award“ of United Nations Environmental Programme for driving two times around the world in solar powered vehicles.
Palmer’s next project is the organisation of the annual WAVE TROPHY (World Advanced Vehicle Expedition), the world’s largest electric vehicle rally, setting off in Plauen (Germany) and leading via Berlin and Berne to St.Gallen in Switzerland between 12 and 20 June 2015. In total 90 vehicles have registered to drive this 2500 km tour in 8 days, to raise awareness for electric mobility and a more sustainable future.
The race itself ended in controversy as race winner Lucas di Grassi was excluded after his electric car was found to have been running with a modified front wing.
This meant that Jerome D’Ambrosio was named the winner of the race. It also had major repercussions for the overall championship standings, allowing Nelson Piquet Jr to take the lead and open up a 10 point gap on di Grassi.
