VW has released some teaser images for a new concept that ‘signals the Volkswagen brand’s entry into a new era’. The electric vehicle will form the basis for one of the most important cars in the company’s history as it looks to shake up the plug-in market.

Volkswagen is presenting at the Paris Motor Show – where the entire car will be officially unveiled – under the banner ‘Think New’. A year on from the breaking of the VW Emissions Scandal, the concept and follow on model is built on the company’s new modular electrification kit (MEB) platform.

Like the existing MQB platform, this architecture has been designed from the outset to by used across a large number of VW Group products, though the MEB is built around an electric powertrain.

The concept set to go on show in the next couple of weeks is being pitched by VW as being as important as the original Beetle was to the company. That model became the best selling car ever, and VW says the new electric model has the same potential to make history.

No details are being announced as yet, though the VW will need to have an electric range of at least 200 miles to keep it current by the time a production model arrives. It is expected that it will have a range of closer to 300 miles to challenge Tesla’s forthcoming Model 3 and provide a more accessible alternative to other VW Group 300-mile EVs in the pipeline. Further information will be announced closer to the show and the concept’s launch.
