Leading data analytics consultancy Field Dynamics approached Zapmap for assistance with a report on household proximity to public charging points.

With electric vehicle ownership rising, and households with no off-street parking reliant on access to public EV charging, Field Dynamics wanted to ask a simple question. How good is that access?

The research carried out by Field Dynamics leveraged charge point location data from Zapmap in parallel with information from Ordnance Survey.

"Detailed location data from Zapmap enabled us to conduct an in-depth study on access to public charging in Great Britain.”

The report revealed a significant increase in the number of households close to public chargers.

Field Dynamics identified every household in Great Britain without space to park a small EV next to the house to charge – and called these ‘on-street households’. The consultancy also calculated how many ‘on-street households’ were within a five-minute walk of a public charger, and aggregated this information to each council area to show the level of service each council was providing.

The result was an interactive map of Great Britain, displaying the percentage of ‘on-street households’ in a council area that were within five minutes’ walk of a public charger.

Field Dynamics's interactive map leveraged charge point location data from Zapmap.

“We worked with Zapmap to create a really punchy report and interactive map on households’ proximity to public charging points,” said Ben Allan, Managing Director at Field Dynamics.

“Assisted by Zapmap’s exhaustive datasets, we were able to properly get under the skin of on-street charging provision, and identify households that weren’t within walking distance of a public charger.

Ultimately, the report revealed a significant increase in the number of households living close to public chargers since 2020 – but with wide variations between local authorities.

Field Dynamics’ projects span both the public and private sector, covering a range of clients, including over 200 local authorities. This experience gives the consultancy a unique understanding of the issues faced on a daily basis, from restricted budgets to juggling multiple stakeholders. The company performs advanced data science and spatial analysis, as well as creating bespoke modelling solutions.
