Hyundai has announced that it is expanding the Ioniq name to create a dedicated electric sub-brand. The move will see the Korean firm introduce three Ioniq EV models over the next four years.

This will start early next year with the Ioniq 5 a mid-sized pure-electric crossover, based on the concept ’45’ (below left). Models will be built on the E-GMP platform, with the architecture allowing for 800 V systems to be included on models.

Longer range and faster charging figures will be offered by Hyundai on its next phase of electric vehicles, all bearing the Ioniq badge. The move to an electric sub-brand follows the likes of Volvo, VW, and Mercedes Benz – Polestar, ID., and EQ respectively – to create a naming system dedicated to electric cars.

Initial models have been confirmed as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, and Ioniq 7. The Ioniq 6 will be a saloon based on the Prophecy concept from March this year (below right), and due in 2022. Hyundai will then bring a large SUV to market in the shape of the Ioniq 7 in early 2024.
