The UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) has appointed Zapmap as its Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Open Data provider.
Following a competitive tender process, Zapmap has been awarded a contract to supply the DfT with open data from public chargepoints. Under the contract, Zapmap will aggregate publicly available data from all public chargepoints in the UK and provide this on a periodic basis to the DfT.
Zapmap has been a trusted data partner to the DfT since 2017, providing information on the growth of the public chargepoint infrastructure throughout the UK. This new contract moves beyond the longstanding provision of data to illustrate the growth of the public network to also deliver enhanced and more granular open data focusing on charging sessions and downtime at EVSE level.

The Public Charge Point Regulations (PCPR) 2023 mandate that from the 24th November 2024, charge point operators (CPOs) must make publicly available reference and availability data in a machine-readable format for all public chargepoints. The EV Open Data contract sees Zapmap aggregating and supplying all such data to DfT on a chargepoint and CPO basis.
As well as supporting continuation and development of the DfT’s official public electric vehicle charging infrastructure statistics, chargepoint open data will also facilitate a deeper understanding of patterns of usage across different types of charging, which will help to deliver targeted growth and to shape informed policy decisions.
Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder & COO at Zapmap, said:
“We are delighted to have been awarded this significant contract, which recognises Zapmap’s robust data onboarding and quality control mechanisms and our strong, longstanding relationships within the industry. The availability of this data to government will support them in their decision-making and policy development, which in turn should help organisations and EV drivers make the switch to EV with confidence.”
Aggregated data that is being provided to the DfT under this contract is also available to the rest of the industry via the Zapmap Insights product suite.
