ReFLEX Orkney is a scheme designed to maximise the potential for renewable energy production on the island. This means it’ll create its own energy rather than relying on electricity imported from the UK mainland. The island already generates over 100% of its electricity demand from renewables. This project ensures the community will take full advantage of this through low-carbon transport and power services.
To increase the use of electric vehicles, ReFLEX has an EV leasing model for Orkney residents — with strong financial incentives for early adopters. The cars will be supplied by electric vehicle leasing company DriveElectric and will range from compact cars through to estates. There will also be a variety of vans on offer, too. All will be available with affordable lease financing, helping residents avoid large upfront costs.
ReFLEX has also introduced new 100% renewable electricity tariffs, which will help link energy technologies with ReFLEX’s integrated energy system, FlexiGrid.

Part of the ReFLEX project also focuses on installing smart chargers and meters to help residents get the best price for their electricity. This is a good model for a local community working from 100% renewable energy and the addition of a range of electric vehicles for travel around the island is welcomed.
