A new rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging point has been installed by Fareham Borough Council at Civic North Car Park (PO16 7AE), as part of the Hampshire County Council initiative to provide a network of charge points across the county.
The new charge point, installed by Southern Electric, was part funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles who covered 75 per cent of the cost.
As with all rapid charging points it is able to 80% charge an EV in under 30 minutes.
Drivers will have to pay a fee between £5 and £7 to use the point but will enjoy free parking whilst charging.
Fareham councillor Keith Evans, executive member for planning and development, said: “Electric vehicles and hybrids are becoming more popular and we felt it important that people living and working in Fareham were not put off from owning a green car due to a lack of charging facilities.”
The multi-standard unit on Civic Way caters for the majority of EVs that are capable of rapid charging.
Hampshire County Council are planning to unveil several new charging points over the coming months at the following locations:Andover – Texaco Service Station, Charlton Road
Farnborough – ESSO Petrol Station, Bridge Street
Ringwood – The Furlong Car Park, A31
Romsey – Romsey Rapids Leisure Centre Car Park
Councillor Seán Woodward, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment said “Hampshire County Council Is delighted to be able to roll out electric vehicle charge points across the county. The charge points can power up an electric vehicle in as little as 30 minutes; providing enough charge for 100 miles of travel with the cost varying between £5-7 depending on a vehicles charge capacity. Parking in the designated charging bays, for up to 1 hour, whilst the charge is taking place is free. With running costs like these it is easy to see why more people are buying electric vehicles.”
