Audi has given its pure-EV range the performance treatment, with the launch of the e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback.

Powered by three electric motors producing up to 503 hp and 973 Nm of torque, the e-tron S models will complete the 0-62 mph sprint in just 4.5 seconds.

The e-tron S and e-tron S Sportback use the same powertrain, which adapts that found on the more conventional e-tron 55 quattro models. Here, Audi uses the more powerful rear motor of the e-tron 55 on the front axle, and uses two e-tron 55 front-axle motors on the rear.

The battery remains the same at 95 kWh, as does the 150 kW charging system. Because of the increased performance, electric driving range is down, but still comfortably tops 200 miles on a charge at 223 miles for the e-tron S and 226 miles for the e-tron S Sportback.

To improve efficiency, only the rear motors are used for most driving needs, with the front axle called into play for full four-wheel drive when more performance is required, or when traction is lost at the rear.

Electric torque vectoring looks to improve handling, by slightly braking the inside wheel when cornering, and both models are slightly wider to accommodate larger tyres, with flared wheel arches and other sportier design details complementing other Audi S models.

Prices start at £87,000 for the e-tron S and £88,700 for the e-tron S Sportback, and orders can be placed this summer.
