A new project could see hundreds of EV charge hubs rolled out across London, as lock-ups are converted to EV charging sites.
Set-up by a partnership involving SSE Enterprise and InfraTech Property Solutions, proposals see SSE’s EV infrastructure expertise combine with access to lock-up sites across the capital managed by InfraTech.
Plans are to turn lock-up garage sites into smart charging locations, known as Digital Community Hubs (DCHs), which combine rapid charging with 5G connectivity.
A DCH will comprise of 10-20 rapid charging bays, and provide facilities such as an on-site coffee van for waiting EV drivers.
The first project is hoped to install a DCH site close to Heathrow Terminal 4 later this year, a key location for local delivery and taxi drivers.
Solar and battery technology on-site, as well as smart energy generation and storage, will be used at the site to ease load on the local electricity grid.
Sites can be located across London, and will include rapid and ultra-rapid points to keep recharging times as low as possible.
The hub infrastructure will be designed, developed, and operated by SSE Enterprise, and aims are to roll out the systems at up to 1,000 InfraTech managed sites across London and the Home Counties.
Kevin Welstead, SSE Enterprise EV Sector Director, says that if the community hub network was rolled-out fully, it could charge more than 100,000 cars every year.
