Porsche Taycan Turbo: Range & charging

The Porsche Taycan Turbo comes with the Performance Battery Plus pack, meaning there’s a single choice of battery and powertrain. Other Taycan models have a choice of a smaller battery and/or varying power levels. Porsche offers DC charging at up to 270 kW, with an 11 kW AC on-board charger fitted as standard.

Range

The Porsche Taycan Turbo’s official WLTP driving range is as good as 272 miles on a charge, though the Taycan line-up has longer and shorter ranges available.

In real-world conditions, the Porsche Taycan Turbo only got to around 230 miles on a charge – still significant mileage – though this is in chilly conditions and making the most of the performance potential.

Taking it a little easier or sticking to greater amounts of urban driving sees that range rise to around 250 miles on a charge.

Braking

Porsche doesn’t have a focus on one-pedal driving, preferring instead to retain as much of the feel of ‘traditional’ sports cars as possible. Regen efficiency is good, but requires use of the brake pedal at anything other than conventional engine braking strengths.

Charging

A real strength of the Taycan is its charging capabilities. DC CCS charging is possible at up to 270 kW, and AC on Type 2 at up to 11 kW, meaning even with a large battery, recharging times can be kept to a minimum. On an ultra-rapid point, a charge to 80% can take around 20 minutes.

For Porsche to make an EV, the challenge was to still make it drive like a Porsche should – precise, agile, and fast. With the Taycan, they’ve comfortably achieved that, as it feels every inch a Porsche.

What’s the Porsche Taycan Turbo like to drive?

Power in this Turbo model comes in at 460 kW, which is good for a 0-62mph time of just 3.2 seconds. So it’s certainly fast. It feels it too when on the road, but the performance on offer is accessible, not frightening. It’s refined on the motorway or in town, but is a dream down country roads.

Porsche Taycan Turbo: Comfort & Practicality

Despite being a large saloon, the Taycan isn’t hugely spacious inside – though it’s far from a squeeze either. A reasonable boot, space for four adults inside, and a small front load area makes for a practical machine, rather than a vastly spacious one. Considering the sleek lines and packaging for a large battery, this shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Design and functionality

The design is close to the Mission E concept, remarkable close, and it’s a stylish, clean piece of styling. Distinct from the rest of the line-up, but still clearly a Porsche, it’s a great piece of design. Inside, the controls are more digital than other Porsche models, but still very much part of the Stuttgart brand’s house style. The steering wheel is simple, and welcomely so, whilst the seats are comfortable and supportive.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo is one of the best electric cars on the market. Yes it costs more than £100,000, so you would expect a quality machine for that money, but Porsche delivers. A good range, excellent performance, and a driving experience as yet unmatched by any other electric car makes for a world-class EV.
