Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and cloud platform Kaluza are joining forces to provide smart charging for the new Fiat 500 EV. The UK will be the testbed for this project to help develop direct-to-car smart charging without the need for a dedicated smart charger.
The technology on trial will leverage live data from the local grid. This will enable it to shift car charging to times when carbon intensity is lowest and energy is cheapest. This allows drivers to benefit from reduced bills, lower carbon emissions and a seamless charging experience.
Roberto Di Stefano, head of e-Mobility for the EMEA region at FCA, commented: “The agreement with Kaluza to explore smart charging technologies represents an excellent opportunity to reduce vehicles’ charging costs, and subsequently the total cost of ownership. Furthermore, this innovation will allow our Fiat 500 EV customers to experience the benefits without the need to install specific charging equipment.”
A select group of UK Fiat 500 EV customers will trial the smart charging service during the first half of 2021. During this time, they’ll provide ongoing feedback to help develop the service.

Details of the new Fiat 500 EV were announced earlier this year. It’ll be available in hatchback and cabrio versions with two battery options, a WLTP range of up to 199 miles, and will be priced from £19,995 OTR (inclusive of PiCG).
