We will now start to see green number plates on electric vehicles around the UK. This will raise awareness for the growing number of zero-emission vehicles on our roads. These new plates will also help electric car drivers benefit from local initiatives — including cheaper parking and entry into zero-emission zones.
Transport Minister Rachel Maclean said: “We are going further and faster than any other major economy to decarbonise transport, improving air quality in our towns and cities in the process and harnessing the power of clean, green technology to end the UK’s contribution to climate change by 2050.”
These new number plates can be fitted to any existing zero-emission cars, vans, buses, HGVs and motorcycles. However, these plates are optional, not mandatory, on both existing vehicles and new ones.
MacLean continued: “Not only will green number plates raise awareness of the increasing number of cleaner vehicles on our roads, they could also unlock a number of incentives for drivers. It’s clear there has never been a better time to make the switch to a zero-emission vehicle.”
Research carried out by Nissan and Yougov claims that 32% of people surveyed would be more likely to buy an electric car because of the new plates. Many electric vehicle owners are proud to show off they’re driving a zero-emission vehicle but local incentives sweeten the deal for a lot of drivers.
These plates will also build awareness for the wide range of zero-emission vehicles out there, making each drive a potential shop window for other drivers looking for a green car.
