National Chargepoint Registry decommission

What now for developers, local authorities and industry players looking for aggregated data on charge points across the UK?

When was the National Chargepoint Registry (NCR) decommissioned?

The National Chargepoint Registry (NCR) served as an open database for public electric vehicle (EV) charge point information. It was decommissioned and closed on 28th November 2024.

The NCR provided a source of open data on EV charge points, based on voluntary uploads by charge point operators. While this resource did not cover the whole of the UK’s public charging data set, it provided a free asset to developers, local authorities and industry leaders by offering information on charge points across the UK.

What replaces the National Chargepoint Registry (NCR)?

The Government has not put forward any plans to provide free-to-access aggregated charge point data to replace the NCR.

Since 24th November 2024 all public EV charge point operators are required under the Public Chargepoint Regulations 2023 to share open data free of charge on elements such as location, real-time availability, connector types, and payment methods. This enables Zapmap to supply more complete charge point data to EV drivers and organisations, through our app and Insights offering.

Zapmap is the leading source of EV charging data and insights, providing an authoritative view of the shape and usage of the UK’s EV charging infrastructure, and the attitudes and behaviours of EV drivers.

Zapmap Insights takes the comprehensive Zapmap database of charging points and, through detailed analysis, tracks the growth and composition of the UK's charging infrastructure, presented via a series of graphs updated on a  monthly basis. Zapmap also provides the Department for Transport with the data used in the free to access Official Statistics, published monthly and more detailed analysis quarterly.  Individual charge points are viewable on the Zapmap app.

Where can I access charge point location data?

Zapmap Insights provides charge point location data and utilisation data to help you understand the UK’s EV charging landscape with confidence — with unparalleled accuracy and the insight to make strategic, informed decisions. Access comprehensive, credible, and reliable data and insights on UK charge points to ensure you stay ahead in the rapidly-evolving EV landscape.

If you are a Local Authority then the Zapmap charge point location data can be accessed via an upgrade to NEVIS the Local Authority planning tool provided by Cenex.

Where should I submit details for charge points now that NCR has been closed?

With the NCR being decommissioned Local Authorities and new Charge Point Operators may wonder where to share specific details of charge points that are added to the public network. If there is not already a data connection between the particular operating CPO and Zapmap then the details of charge points can be submitted manually to Zapmap

Points that appear on Zapmap are then included in the data feed provided to The Department for Transport for the UK's official charge point statistics.
