Hyundai has announced that its forthcoming Kona Electric will start at £29,495 in the UK – without the Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG).
As the model is not available yet, the Kona Electric has not been signed off by OLEV as eligible for the PiCG, worth up to £4,500 off the cost of a new pure-electric model.
As such, the Kona Electric will – in all likelihood – start from £24,995 when it goes on sale later this year. That’s for the entry level SE trim and 39 kWh battery, though there will also be a Premium 30 kWh trim, plus Premium and Premium SE with the larger 64 kWh battery.
The Kona Electric 64 kWh version is the one with the headline-grabbing 300 mile range; quoted as just short of 300 miles on the WLTP tests, and 339 on NEDC. The 39 kWh model will have a WLTP-based range of up to 194 miles (214 NEDC).
A 120 kW motor will power the Kona Electric 64 kWh, enough of a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds, while a 100 kW motor drives the smaller-battery model, offering a sprint time of 9.7 seconds 0-62mph. Both models are fitted with a 7.2 kW on-board charger, and will accept up to 100 kW from CCS ultra-rapid charge points (once some have been installed).
Standard equipment will include 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch infotainment screen with DAB, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, climate control, keyless entry and start, and leather steering wheel.
Premium – where the 64 kWh range starts – adds privacy glass, LED real lights, front parking sensors, automatic wipers, 8-inch touchscreen display with navigation, and KRELL stereo. Top of the range Premium SE includes LED headlights with high beam assist, heads-up display, leather trim, and electric front seats with heating/ventilation, and heated steering wheel.
All models will feature a high level of safety kit, with Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Recognition (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Smart Cruise Control (ASCC) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with individual tyre pressure display all standard. Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Follow Assist (LFA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are also available dependant on trim level.
The Kona Electric will be available to order on Hyundai’s website from 2nd August, with dealership roll-out scheduled for early next year.
Kona Electric 39 kWh prices are expected to cost almost £25,000 for the SE trim, and £26,370 for Premium. The Kona Electric 64 kWh range starts with Premium trim, and an expected price of £29,495, while top-of-the-range Kona Electric 64 kWh Premium SE trim will probably start at £31,795. All four of these prices have had the £4,500 PiCG taken off – for the official prices, add that figure back on.
