With the roll-out of more than 50 new charge-points, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has the largest lamp-post EV charging network in London.
Launched by Robert Llewellyn, the council’s on-street EV charge points allow residents to charge their car’s battery from a converted lamp-post.
Residents can buy a smart cable – which has a built in meter – to charge their car and be billed for the amount of electricity they use.
The local authority is one of only a few to have claimed some of the UK Government’s £4.5 million fund established specifically for this purpose – to help councils install on-street charge points.
Lead Member for Transport, Cllr Gerard Hargreaves, said: “Kensington and Chelsea is leading the charge by retro-fitting street lamps across the borough with electric vehicle chargers.
“One of the biggest barriers to electric car ownership is the perceived lack of on-street charging. The Council’s new technology will help to remove these barriers by making charging simple and convenient for residents.
“The lamp post charge points are conveniently located next to pay and display parking bays and are available for use 24 hours a day.”
