Pure-electric models have taken three of the five available categories in the World Car of the Year Awards 2020. Porsche’s Taycan took two prizes, and Kia’s Soul EV won its class.
The Kia won World Urban Car of the Year 2020, beating another EV in the shortlist in the shape of the Mini Electric.
Porsche’s Taycan dominated the awards categories, taking both World Performance Car of the Year 2020 award and the World Luxury Car of the Year 2020 award.
In the performance class, Porsche had a complete lock-out of the three model shortlist. Intriguingly, the Taycan took the title over established names from the Stuttgart manufacturer in Porsche’s 911 and 718. Both lost out to the electric saloon.
The luxury award saw the Taycan up against the 911 again, plus another electric rival in Mercedes Benz’s EQC. The Taycan took the category by a large margin over both shortlisted models.
The Taycan came a close runner-up in the World Car Design of the Year Award – won by the Mazda 3. The overall award was won by Kia, though instead of its latest electric model, it was the Telluride that triumphed, which isn’t available in Europe.
