Kia teases Niro EV ahead of CES

Kia is set to reveal a new EV concept at CES next week. Due for its world debut on 8th January, the all-electric concept will wrap up the company’s visions for future mobility and the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Kia – and sister company Hyundai – are working hard on electrifying its model line-up. Kia already boasts the now-ageing Soul EV, as well as the newer Niro PHEV, and Optima & Optima Sportswagon PHEVs. This new concept will display a possible future design direction, as well as autonomous driving technologies.

Although refered to in Kia’s press release only as a nameless all-electric concept, the teaser images published alongside the release clearly show Niro EV used in the bodywork.

Whether this will remain a pure-concept, or if Kia will preview a new and all-electric version of its Niro crossover, we shall have to wait and see. Considering Hyundai’s Ioniq is available as an EV, PHEV or Hybrid, current policy wouldn’t rule out the Niro going the same way – with just the EV model currently missing from completing an electrified Niro trio.

Dr Woong-cheol Yang, Vice Chairman and Head of Hyundai-Kia R&D Center, said: “Virtual reality, self-driving cars, and full vehicle connectivity were all once considered technologies of the distant future. As they rapidly become a reality, Kia is exploring how to adapt these new technologies for its customers.

“At CES we will share our strategy and vision for future mobility, and exhibit a range of advanced technologies that our customers can look forward to.”
