Mercedes is set to introduce a world first next year with the creation of a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell version of its GLC SUV. The move combines the two leading ultra low emission vehicle technologies being worked on by major motoring manufacturers at the moment and is likely to spark further models from Mercedes and other companies in the near future.

The GLC F-Cell will feature a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, which sees energy generated by a fuel cell stack from hydrogen stored in two on-board tanks power an electric motor. However the battery pack, that acts as a buffer between the motor and fuel cell, will also be able to be charged in the same way a plug-in hybrid can, from an external source.

The combination sees Mercedes quote a range of around 310 miles (500km) in total – 280 miles from the hydrogen stored, and 30 miles from the 9 kWh battery pack. Mercedes has a number of plug-in hybrid models on sale currently, but this is the first time that a plug-in hydrogen hybrid will be offered.

The announcement comes as part of Mercedes Benz’s parent firm Daimler’s announcement today (Monday 13th February) that it is investing more than seven billion euros (£5.5bn) in green technologies. This includes the creation of the plug-in hydrogen hybrid electric vehicle, along with a new 48-volt hybrid system which offers four times the power and assistance of Mercedes’ current 12-volt hybrid set-up.

Mercedes will also expand its PHEV range to include the GLC Coupe 350e and new E-Class E350e, and EV versions of the entire Smart range will be created – fortwo ed (electric drive), fortwo cabrio ed and, for the first time, the forfour ed.

A facelift is planned for the Mercedes S500e PHEV and the manufacturer is set to roll-out CCS (Combined Charging System) compatibility across its all-electric range from 2018 for faster charging capabilities.

Finally, Mercedes is ramping up development of car connectivity services to help drivers make the most of their electric range, while the manufacturer has also designed a 22kW wallbox charger for customers to charge at home or work.
