Smart has revealed details of its new pure-electric models – the EQ fortwo coupe, EQ fortwo cabrio, and EQ forfour. Pricing for the revised EVs will start from £16,850 (inc PiCG).
The technical specifications of the compact electric range remain unchanged from the outgoing models. That sees a driving range of around 70 miles available from each of the three models.
A 17.2 kWh battery powers the Smart models’ 60 kW electric motor with drive going to the rear wheels in all three cases. The 22 kW on-board charger – optional on the previous iterations – is now standard, effectively offering rapid charging times since the battery capacity is relatively compact. Charging from a 22+ kW charge point will see a 10-80% charge in under 40 minutes through the Type 2 inlet.
Although the mechanicals have been left essentially unchanged, the design and equipment levels are significantly improved. Sharper styling front and rear will attract more customers in, whilst kit both inside and out is boosted.
Fitted as standard on all models are rear parking sensors, a multi-function steering wheel, and smart media system which includes sat-nav, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, DAB, and Android Auto connectivity.
There are four trim levels at launch – passion advanced, pulse premium, prime exclusive, and edition 1 – with prices starting at £16,850 for the fortwo coupe, £17,285 for the forfour, and £20,420 for the fortwo cabrio, all inclusive of £3,500 UK Plug-in Car Grant. Order books are open now with deliveries expected from March 2020.
