This is the first major redesign of the Model S since its launch in 2012 and there are a few notable features from the interior layout to an updated range. The Model X is also getting an updated interior. This improves on the interiors of the Model 3 and Model Y.
In 2020, Tesla announced the Model S Plaid+, which we can expect in late 2021. If it’s long-distance mileage you want from your electric car, this is the one to go for as it has a range of 520 miles.
Spaceship steering controls
The exteriors of both the Model S and Model X have been slightly updated but it’s the interior where you’ll notice the most difference. First, off the steering wheel has been updated with this space-ship-style yoke look that’s a big departure from a traditional steering wheel. You may recognise the shape from the Cybertruck and Roadster concepts. The stalk-less design means you’ll be controlling things like wipers and lights directly from the steering control in front of you.
Tesla has also released images of this updated interior with a round steering wheel, perhaps hedging their bets in case customers don’t like this clear leap into the future.
You’ll be able to play games while you charge
Another big change is to the screens. You’ll still get the driver information screen behind the steering wheel but the giant middle screen has changed orientation in the Model S and Model X. There’s also another little screen in the back, which can be used for gaming with wireless controllers.
This updated interior has clearly been thought about with entertainment in mind. In its announcement, Tesla said: “Up to 10 teraflops of processing power enables in-car gaming on-par with today’s newest consoles via Tesla Arcade. Wireless controller compatibility allows gaming from any seat.” Perfect if you’re stopping to charge and need to entertain yourself and your passengers for an hour.
Like the Model 3, the Model S will now also get a glass roof and the rear seats have been updated for comfort and include little upgrades like a wireless device charger.
This refresh is bound to excite a lot of Tesla fans. Bringing the Model S and Model X in line with newer models and showcasing some futuristic updates raises the bar for a lot of other electric vehicle manufacturers out there.
