Volvo has added a second plug-in hybrid model to its XC40 range, as the Swedish firm rolls out increased electrified options across its model line-up.

The new Volvo XC40 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T4 sits beneath the existing T5 model, and offers an electric-only range of up to 27 miles on a charge. CO2 emissions are rated at 47 g/km and the WLTP combined fuel economy is 134.5 MPG.

The PHEV set-up uses a 60 kW electric motor and 10.7 kWh battery, combined with a 1.5 litre petrol engine, powering the front wheels through a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

With a starting price of £39,130 for the R-Design model and £39,475 for the Inscription trim, both models come in beneath the £40,000 Premium Rate VED threshold. It means buyers save the additional £325 a year for years 2-6, and complements the 12% BIK rate for company car drivers.

Orders can be placed now and deliveries are expected in October.
