Ionity and Shell have agreed a deal that will see the UK’s first ultra-rapid charge points under the EV charging network installed at the fuel giant’s forecourts.
Created by BMW, Daimler, Ford, and Audi and Porsche from the VW Group, Ionity plans to roll-out the ultra-rapid units – capable of charging at 350kW – at 400 locations by 2020, and 100 by the end of 2018.
Spaced at 75 mile intervals along major European routes, the charge stations will allow for fast long-distance EV travel when models come on the market to handle the full charging capability.
Each location will have six charge points on average, though it’s not clear from terminology yet, it is expected that each device will have one connector, using the CCS standard fitted to EVs offered by the founding companies.
István Kapitány, Shell Executive Vice President of Retail, said: “Customers want to be able to travel long distances in electric vehicles – with the knowledge that there is a reliable, convenient means of charging their vehicles.”
Shell will also install charge points at locations in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden have also been confirmed as countries set to be covered by the network.
