Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled the e-Bulli – a concept that showcases the company’s electric vehicle expertise in the classic VW T1.

Fitted with a 61 kW electric motor, which replaces the existing 44 hp four-cylinder boxer engine, the e-Bulli has almost twice the original’s power, and significantly more torque. As such. this is the most powerful ‘official’ T1 ever produced.

Charging is carried out via the 22 kW AC on-board charger, with 50 kW DC charging possible with the CCS inlet. This will charge the 45 kWh battery, allowing for a range of more than 124 miles on a charge.

Although a concept, the e-Bulli has been completed as a result of a partnership between VW Commercial Vehicles and electric car conversion specialists eClassics. Going forward, eClassics will now offer T1 conversions and T1 complete vehicles with the e-Bulli’s features.

With such a popular shape and a huge following around the world, the T1 – in Samba Bus configuration here – will surely by a hit with those wanting to improve performance, emissions, and driving characteristics of their classic VW, though there’s a significant cost involved. It’s also a bridge between VW’s iconic commercial vehicle and the forthcoming production variant of the ID. Buzz, which draws inspiration from the original T1.

T2 and T3 conversions are being offered by eClassics too, and although UK pricing hasn’t been announced, prices for a T1 conversion start at 64,900 euros. Qualified dealers are able to buy ready-to-fit parts kits.
