Zap-Map was yesterday announced winner of the ‘Accelerating towards Net Zero’ category at this year’s British Renewable Energy Awards, held in Birmingham. The awards, which began in 2006, recognise the work of organisations and individuals pushing for system change.

This year’s event saw a change in format, with the Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner moving outside of London for the first time to highlight the importance of driving green and inclusive growth across the whole of society and unlocking local potential. This year’s celebration took place in at the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, and sought the next generation of ‘Game Changers’ pushing for a future built on renewable energy and clean technology.

The awards, sponsored this year by Drax, consisted of 16 categories ranging from ‘Installer of the Year’ through to ‘Accelerating to Net Zero’ and ‘best Young RE Professional’ – with 100 organisations and individuals put forward as finalists.

A new award sponsored by Cadent, the ‘Accelerating towards Net Zero’ category recognised Zap-Map for building trust in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, which is vital to the transition away from fossil fuel powered transport. Zap-Map was one of six organisations shortlisted for the award, alongside Environmental Compliance Solutions, Energy Systems Catapult, COP26 UK Team, National Grid ESO Pathfinder, and OZEV.

“One of the real privileges of my job is to celebrate the brilliant work of so many organisations and individuals in our sector and this year there are over 100 exceptional finalists,” said Dr Nina Skorupska CBE, Chief Executive of the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA). “They are the ‘Game Changers’ who are leading the way on the path to Net Zero.”

With transport currently representing 27% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, there is an urgent need to transition towards a zero-emission transport system. Zap-Map, whose mission is to accelerate the shift to electric vehicles and help the drive towards zero carbon mobility, was recognised as a key facilitator in this transition.

“We’re delighted that Zap-Map has won the Accelerating towards Net Zero category, especially at such a prestigious event as the British Renewable Energy Awards, which is now in its 17th year!” said Zap-Map Co-founder & CTO Ben Lane.

“It was great to attend the event at the wonderful Botanical Gardens in Birmingham (highly innovative in its time!), in the presence of so many other people and companies all sharing the commitment to achieving Net Zero.”

In March, Zap-Map was announced as winner of the Whole Energy System Innovation award at the 2022 Green Energy Awards, hosted by Regen, a leading centre of expertise in the transition to net zero energy.

Regen described Zap-Map as “an easy-to-use app encouraging the uptake of EVs through data sharing. The app allows EV drivers to search for available charge points, plan longer electric journeys, pay for charging and share updates with other EV drivers.”
