Audi has announced plans to put a 100% battery-electric version of their iconic R8 supercar into production. What’s more, they say this will offer a range of approximately 280 miles.
The second incarnation of R8 e-tron has now been confirmed for production, having decided against bringing the first to market due to an unsatisfactory 134 mile range.
The new R8 e-tron will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 92kWh, almost twice the size of the original battery fitted and 10% more than a Tesla Model S. This will power two electric motors on the rear axle, delivering a total of 456bhp and 920Nm.
The R8 e-tron 2.0 accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to an electronically restricted top speed of 130mph or 155mph.
The car will be fitted with the Combine Charging System (CCS) charging inlet, allowing the car to take advantage of the compatible rapid units available to the public across the UK.
Audi say that “using this system, it is possible to fully charge the battery in significantly less than two hours.”
The Audi R8 e-tron will be available to order later in 2015.
