Merseytravel’s electric vehicle (EV) public charging network, ‘Recharge’, is now officially open with the first four 7kW charging units being installed at the Seacombe Ferry Terminal in Wirral.
These points are now live and ready to be used by EV drivers. What’s more they are now showing on Zap-Map live, bringing the number of charge points marked on our UK-wide charging point map to 6,525 (29/07/2014).
Recharge is an EV project directed by Merseytravel and part funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV). It has been designed to encourage sustainable transport and the uptake of electric transport by initially connecting a network of 124 EV charging points across the Liverpool City Region, Cheshire West and Chester.
The 124 planned charging points will be 7kW Fast rated charge points, strategically located around Merseyside to provide a convenient network for EV drivers to charge at. Specifically, the project will target key railway Park and Ride sites amongst other locations.
Councillor Liam Robinson, chair of Merseytravel, said “The uptake of electric vehicles by both people and businesses is set to increase in the coming years and this project may help to speed up that process, with all of the associated advantages it will bring for the environment and our economy.”
Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, added his thoughts on the Recharge project: “I very much welcome this move. It is a big step forward in making the city region greener and cleaner as it will help reduce pollution and improve air quality.”
For the moment the charging stations are free-to-use, with the view of introducing fees in April 2015. To access the points you must be a part of the Charge Your Car (CYC) network by either registering for a £10 CYC RFID card online or downloading the CYC Smartphone App.
